Providing added value for citizens with environmental data

Hawa Dawa won the Leipzig Smart City Challenge «Urban Environmental Data – View & Understand». The approach presented by Hawa Dawa to the question «How can urban environmental data be prepared in a target-group-oriented, innovative and interactive way?» was chosen as the winner by the interdisciplinary jury of the City of Leipzig taking into account clearly defined evaluation criteria. The city of Leipzig focuses on the usability of environmental data by citizens.

Against the background of growing demands on data and information on the environment, the City of Leipzig would like to supplement and improve the existing information offer with new digital options and integrate them into an interactive, digitally based environmental atlas.

They were looking for a digital communication strategy for environmental data that makes invisible data visibly, easily understandable and entertaining to the target group of the public.

The approach presented by Hawa Dawa was measured against two core requirements: the usability and added value for the citizens of Leipzig and the ability to integrate into the current and planned information and data infrastructure of the city of Leipzig. On the one hand, user-oriented criteria such as media-didactic and group-appropriate preparation, user-oriented designs up to accessibility requirements had to be met. In addition, the solution had to take into account the extensibility to include additional environmental topics, a sustainable data structure and the integration of the urban spatial data infrastructure, while at the same time taking into account practical aspects such as low maintenance costs for updates and the link to the website of the city of Leipzig. Leipzig was looking for a solution that could be permanently integrated into a comprehensive environmental information system.

Karim Tarraf, CEO of Hawa Dawa, explains: «Leipzig is clearly focusing on the added value that citizens can derive from the prepared information. The focus is no longer on measurement technology and pure data but on its benefits, enabling citizens to make conscious and informed decisions. Leipzig is thus taking the next step from Smart City to ‘Smart Citizens’. Our vision of establishing environmental data as an important aspect of our decisions is now a reality in Leipzig. A reality that can be transferred to other cities due to the architecture of our solution and scaled accordingly.»
