On the way to a climate-neutral municipality

Smart City model municipality Kirchheim establishes Hawa Dawa network to measure air quality as a basis for sustainable improvements

Hawa Dawa is setting up a sensor-based network in Kirchheim to measure air quality. The smart city model municipality of Kirchheim is thus creating the basis for digital monitoring of air quality in the municipal area. Kirchheim aims to address environmental issues in a sustainable and scientific manner. The spectrum ranges from threshold monitoring and climate protection to traffic management, citizen information and an environmental information system. The data provided by the Hawa Dawa measurement network form an essential basis for this.

In an initial test phase, Hawa Dawa already set up a network consisting of two measuring devices. Due to the positive results of this cooperation, Kirchheim decided to expand this network to cover the entire built-up area of the municipality. Here, the choice of location for the measuring devices was of particular importance to ensure that the measurement data could be used as relevant information by the municipality of Kirchheim. Due to Hawa Dawa’s experience setting up municipal measurement networks, the devices were optimally placed in close coordination with the city. The air quality data is made available via an interface and in the form of regular reports. The interface (API) allows the data to be transferred to other systems without media discontinuity.

Kirchheim has thus created a modern and efficient basis for the holistic recording of air quality, enabling those responsible from different departments to take local air quality into account in their decisions on a fact-based basis. For example, special events – such as construction measures or events – can be evaluated on air quality. More in-depth insights can be achieved through further correlations, e.g. with traffic data.
